Purple Rain

Royalty wears it.  Prince sang about it.

Purple is an all around gorgeous color (think of the Amethyst gemstone).  So why is it that if you find purple in a home its most likely in a little girls bedroom?

Why are we so afraid of purple?  Why don’t more people use this regal color through out their home?  My theory is that we are simply out of practice- we are used to seeing it as one shade for little girls and can’t think of it any other way.  Or maybe we grew up with the soft 80s pastel purple and the thought of putting that in our home leaves a bad taste in our mouth.

Whatever your reason- my suggestion is to throw out all your preconceived notions of purple and re think your purple persona.

If its good enough for Gwyneth its good enough for me.  Here she has used a gorgeous pastel purple for the walls.  The wallpaper has a beautiful sheen combined with that grown up pattern gives this room its regal touch.  Off setting it with the crisp white furniture the room totally brilliant then completed by adding multiple textures- from the rug to the bedding.  This look will make you fall in love with purple again!

Speaking of purple and royalty… I don’t think the little girl who lives in this room is going to be confused about whether or not she is a princess.  What do you think?  Though its a little over the top, it is a great way to do a chic “Princess” theme, without involving Disney characters.  Besides if there is any room in your home you can get away with a strong theme like this its in a Nursery.

Try different shades of purple, maybe one with a little more pink to it for a powder room.  A brilliant purple to make a BIG statement in a dining room (those chairs are gorgeous)seen above.
